Benefits of Individual Therapy

Benefits of Individual Therapy for Opioid Abuse

Overcoming an addiction to opioids requires more than one approach to treatment. Addiction extends beyond the act of physically abusing a substance, and often involves a number of psychological and emotional influences that can make defeating chemical dependency that much more difficult. For this reason, it is recommended that a person working towards recovery receive therapeutic intervention in the form of individual therapy. When individual therapy is factored into the treatment of opioid addiction,   those taking part are able to identify and process the root causes of their addiction. Individual therapy is a therapeutic method that involves a patient and a trained counselor working together in a one-on-one setting.

Building a Foundation

Building a Foundation for Opioid Abuse Recovery

Patients who take part in individual therapy are likely to do the following while engaged in sessions, which ultimately enhances their progress in treatment:

  • Recognizing past traumatic events that may have led to the abuse of opioids or other substances
  • Developing new perspectives related to the underlying causes of substance abuse and addiction
  • Creating new and healthy techniques for coping with stress or negative feelings
  • Appropriately handling setbacks and/or achievements during the course of treatment
  • Developing strategies for avoiding or handling compromising situations in which drug use may be available and tempting
  • Forming personal goals for the present and future

Once patients are able to understand the reasons behind their addictive behaviors, they are able to prepare for a future that is substance-free. Individual therapy helps patients develop healthy and appropriate ways to handle stressors without the use of opioids.

In addition, patients who take part in individual therapy have reported the following as a result of receiving individual therapy:

  • An increase in self-confidence
  • Improved self-esteem
  • A reduction in stress levels
  • An increase in sense of self-awareness

Ann Arbor Comprehensive Treatment Center believes that individual therapy plays a pivotal role in the treatment of opioid addiction. In order to successfully achieve lasting recovery, patients must process the emotional components of their addictions. Through the use of medication-assisted treatment, individuals are able to obtain relief from the physical symptoms of withdrawal, which also provides them with the mental clarity that is necessary to play a productive part in their therapeutic interventions. Individual therapy also allows patients the chance to work through any issues that may arise throughout the course of treatment.

Ann Arbor Comprehensive Treatment Center is here to provide you or someone you love with the highest quality of care as you take the first steps towards long-term recovery. Please contact us today to learn more about individual therapy as well as the other treatment options that we offer.
